This little cornstarch snowman is such a fun activity to do with your students. (This is not my original idea. The original idea came from There's Just One Mommy.) You need to use biodegradable packing peanuts. I let my students use two of them. They use permanent ink markers to draw a face. Some of my kinders will tell me "My Mom doesn't let me use permanent ink markers." LOL... I tell them they are "big kids" in my class and they can use them for this activity.
First, we discuss our hypothesis... Why does a snowman melt? Then, I give the children their recording sheet. They draw their snowman and then predict what will will make their snowman melt.
We are lucky in Illinois to be able to walk outside our classroom door and gather snow. If you do not have snow, though, ice cubes will work. Add snow (or ice) to a container and warm water to another container. Place one snowman in each container.
Then, wait............ patience, Grasshopper.... It takes a little time for this to work......
After a few minutes, you will hear the screams "My snowman is melting!"
We talk about what is happening to the snowman in the warm water and what is happening to the snowman in the snow.
The children then draw their results in the boxes and our fun lesson on what causes things to melt! If you would like the recording sheet, click HERE or on the image of the recording sheet above.
